BrandonCompact Tractor
My dad is going to be buying a compact tractor (a modern tractor) with somewhere between 35HP and 40HP, anybody have any experience?
2008-07-056:28 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
Farmer Brandon is mowin' some lawns! ;-) No tractors aren't that hard. You just gotta know how to drive it. They're easy and not too fast. My grandfather's tractor worked by releasing a pedal which engaged the drive shaft and drove the tractor. Then you had to switch a lever to engage the blades.
2008-07-057:14 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
No I meant as to what one to buy!! Hes looking at Kubota, but I'm antiJapnese (remember hiroshima!!!). Anyways I probably won't be able to touch the thing at $35,000. My grandpa has an old Case and an Allis Chalmers CA, but I was never old enough to use them before he got sick.
2008-07-057:26 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
My grandfather has a "Snapper" and those are pretty good. I think his was 25 HP but it works fine. FYI, don't buy anything from "Daewoo." They suck big time at making anything! They make cars, and they make microwaves! :-P Talk about conglomerates.
2008-07-057:31 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Thats like M$ making Media Player and Web-browsers. lol NEWSFLASH: M$ should make toilets!
2008-07-057:32 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
They never made them. They just bought them and put their name on it. IE came from the once good "Mosaic" and Media Player came from just a simple WAV player for Windows 3.0 with "MMX" (MultiMedia eXtensions).
2008-07-057:37 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Well most Daewoo stuff is probably also rebrands.
2008-07-057:39 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
All I know is when I drove a Daewoo, it doesn't accelerate. You floor the accelerator and it makes noise, nothing more.

I Googled it to check. Google "Telephone pole India" and you'll see images like this.

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I will agree that the new Fords definitely suck. They're just hunks of metal with underpowered engines. But some of the older Fords are actually pretty decent. My Bronco II got me through a blizzard this past January. I got stuck in 2 feet of snow but got out just fine.

All I'm saying is drive a Bronco II. They're great off-road cars. But one type of car that I think is pretty decent are Hondas. They last like forever.

To the dungeons with IE! I hate how M$ apps are now worse since they think it's better not to use menus but just buttons. I've got it! Instead of translating versions of Windows for various countries, they'll just remove all text and put only pictures and image representations. Solves the problem, the Mircosoft way!

MPNQBRe:Compact Tractor
Heh, that reminds me of how I heard my tv manufacturer is fixing the "weekly timer" feature that doesn't work: they're removing it. They give firmware updates you can put on a USB stick. I was looking for them today because it keeps freezing for some odd reason.
2008-07-059:40 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Probably a damn Japanese TV no? What do you do if you have no usb stick?
2008-07-059:51 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I remember my parents got a Sony big screen TV and after 1 year roughly (after the valid warranty) the TV tuner puts out. So whenever we watch cable through the TV and not the VCR/DVD-player, it will show static after over-heating for 5 minutes. They said it was because the tuner chip started expanding from heat and caused it to ruin the reception until it cooled down. :-P
2008-07-059:53 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
Personally, I don't like foreign products unless I get A LOT OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM PEOPLE I KNOW. I don't trust those reviews you see where they say it's the best thing since toast. But if you look at it, it's not that it's Japanese, it's that it has Chinese parts built into it.
2008-07-059:55 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
At my house we have a good old 27" CRT made by RCA and in my bedroom I have a small RCA. RCA is good American shit! So Todd you're saying its th damn Communists?
2008-07-059:56 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I have a good old Sylvania 14" in my bedroom. I've been using it for almost 10 years and it works great! It is the commies. There was talk about how iPods were being made in sweatshops in China.
2008-07-0510:00 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Mine was bought at a yard sale 2 years ago for $20. I would guess iPods are made in cheap Japanese factories but if they were made in china they'd work cheaply. Apple chooses factories wisely, they'd never use Chinese labor.

I mean it was controversy years ago so who knows if it's true.

In the days with Windows 98SE. Until some malfunctioning Gateway software made me lose faith. Plus I used it almost all my life (excluding my DOS days) so I'm used to it. Just like you're used to Apple. And that's fine but I refuse to use anything after XP. XP isn't great but I remove a lot and modify it to run like Windows 98.

I think you're right Jason. I need to start messing with Linux distros.
2008-07-0510:46 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Yes you should. Try Mint. Thats the one I use.
2008-07-0510:49 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I'm going to be looking for an external CD drive for my Compaq since that's one model I can use for Linux. I was checking out Mint's website. It looks pretty neat. Did you ever try QNX? It's a Linux that fits on one floppy and has a GUI with cool apps and stuff.
2008-07-0510:53 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
QNX isn't Linux! And what are the specs of your Compaq?
2008-07-0510:58 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
What?! Someone told me it was and I would've believed it forever. My Compaq's specs are: -233 MHz (Pentium II) -128 MB RAM -4 GB HDD
2008-07-0511:02 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Wikipedia it! Ok well with the laptop its low-end. What I would recommend, start with Debian and install a different WM, like IceWM or maybe XFCE. Everyone will say that more RAM is better but If you take care and choose good apps 128MB should be enough.
2008-07-0511:07 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
Sounds good. Judging by Mint, it looks like it'll need more RAM to run. But if it's GNOME, it should run fine. I tried Kubuntu on it and while KDE was really bogging it, it ran. But I'll experiment.
2008-07-0511:18 PM

jasonwoodlandRe:Compact Tractor
PS: Yay! over 20 posts!
2008-07-0511:31 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Jason, keep double posting and your posts will start to be deleted! Todd, Mint will never run. Hell at that kind of speed your lucky to get anything working. I have a Compaq Presario 1232 with a 233MHz Cyrix, I cannot find a video driver for win98 so the video looks like crap. With the slow Cyrix it barely runs puppy linux!
2008-07-067:24 AM

jasonwoodlandRe:Compact Tractor
Was Jacob deleting your double posts that Todd mentioned? What could possibly happen at 22 posts? I'm not gonna go spammin the site or something. My goal was 20.
2008-07-067:27 AM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
1. It looks bad. 2. Its lazy. 3. Its cheating.
2008-07-067:29 AM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I think it might work. Any version of Linux will work as long as I run it without a WM. KDE loads slowly but it works. KDE is pretty much the big dog of WMs and Linux GUIs, wouldn't you say?
2008-07-066:33 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Hell no the Number 1 most popular Distro is GNOME!! XFCE is even better, but if you want graphics you need a WM even if its simple like twm or a little nicer like iceWM.
2008-07-066:36 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I meant big dog as in it's slow like a dog. KDE uses the most RAM I've seen and GNOME is the most efficient. I want to look and try to build a copy of FVWM95. I still like old-school WMs.
2008-07-066:38 PM

BrandonRe:Compact Tractor
Dude XFCE is much more efficient than GNOME. I tried FVWM95 once, my program menu didn't work quite right.
2008-07-066:41 PM

ToddRe:Compact Tractor
I haven't used XFCE much, except on DCL.
