BrandonOperating Systems
What OS do you use? I use a heavily modified Puppy Linux 4 on my Asus, and Linux Mint on my Athlon. Unfortunately on my Core 2 Duo and my Athlon I have Windows XP to play games (I can't wait for SPORE).

MPNQBRe:Operating Systems
Primarily, Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" w/GNOME and Compiz Fusion. Also has fvwm, twm, ion, wmii, icewm, and others. I occasionally boot into Windows XP MCE 2005 SP2 to sync my ipod and finish up any climateprediction.net workunits still running under XP.

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
I'm in Mint 5 so its based on Ubuntu but made cool. It has GNOME and unfortunately I got an ATi video card and Compiz don't like it. I like iceWM and think my next distro will use it.

MPNQBRe:Operating Systems
If you ever make a server version of DCL, twm would make an excellent window manager for that. Some people even install twm on server versions of Linux themselves. Of course, it hasn't been developed since 1988, however it still functions and it functions well and with very low overhead (that's important for a server).

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
Before I make any new OS I need to mess with Linux From Scratch, then I might make a Debian Based one, to have a large package pool.

Would getting a phone line and hoocking the Windows to the Mac Work Or am I dumb?
2008-07-0510:17 PM

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
I don't think so. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer.
2008-07-0510:19 PM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
That won't really work because you'd be setting a connection through to Windows.
2008-07-0510:21 PM

jasonwoodlandRe:Operating Systems
Yes, I don't want evil Windows connection going to my MacB)

MystikShadowsRe:Operating Systems
I use Windows XP Pro on one machine, I have a 2nd laptop with Windows 98 for DOS coding and well cause I want windows 98, too bad it's discontinued, I'd still be using it today on the main PC if it wasn't discontinued lol. I also have a dell server with Ubuntu Linux on it. so well, I vary. Am I evil? Is my laptop Evil? I don't think so. lol. then again, I don't think evil is meant to be something scary, temptation is what evil is all about so I'm still looking for the cute woman in a red leather suit to tell me which OS to use ROFLMAO then we'll see what's evil. Me, I can resist ANYTHING except temptation. LOL

jasonwoodlandRe:Operating Systems
Isn't Win98 - a GUI, It runs off DOS dosen't it?
2008-07-075:59 AM

MystikShadowsRe:Operating Systems
Yes, that was the case all the way to Windows ME. I think Microsoft should combine all their best versions of windows, Windows CE, Windows ME and windows NT into one, Windows CEMENT and make a Dumb as a brick version. ;) lol
2008-07-076:13 AM

jasonwoodlandRe:Operating Systems
Lol. Poor old M$ had to use DOS. Talking about DOS I got the original with Book, CD, Floppy all mint and sealed from the 1980's
2008-07-076:30 AM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
The Windows 95,98,ME architecture is based to be a GUI that sits on top of DOS and basically runs as a shell. It doesn't just work in any DOS environment because you might notice in "CONFIG.SYS" it calls "HIMEM.SYS" and some other drivers. They set up the environment to load Windows. Because if you usually enter a regular DOS mode or boot using a DOS boot disk, you'll notice you might not be able to run Windows.
2008-07-077:02 AM

jasonwoodlandRe:Operating Systems
Did Bill Gates Give us permission to call our DOS GUIs a OS then? if 'yes' then :woohoo:

MystikShadowsRe:Operating Systems
CD? Was tehre even CD-ROMS in the 80s? at least early 80s? LOL
2008-07-077:20 AM

jasonwoodlandRe:Operating Systems
Oh, it's MS-DOS 6.22 with book and floppysStill sealed though, I'll make some money from it in few years.B)

MystikShadowsRe:Operating Systems
lol Brandon, maybe I'm getting stupider with age ;). (not a damn comment about that, i'm the only one that can laugh about my age lol). I'm runnign Windows XP Professional. I can complain all I want about Windows, but XP is the best distro so far. I'll die before I put vista on any of my PCs. lol. ErgonOS isn't done yet, when it's done, that's what I'm gonna be running. lol
2008-07-0710:46 AM

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
Unless you have anythiong better than an Athlon 64 X2 5400 with 2GB of RAM, don't try vista. I tried vista on those specs and it made WinXP on a Pentium 2 sound fast. So will ErgonOS have somesort of web-browser? Maybe we should make own here as a community project to port to all GUIs? Your age, whats that?
2008-07-0711:06 AM

MystikShadowsRe:Operating Systems

lol, Its ok, your not the old pervent that hangs around forums with teenagers (are you??), you're more like a Wizard, no?
2008-07-0711:45 AM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
So what's wrong with MystikShadows hanging around the forums? Plus why do you degrade everyone for using Windows? Yeah, it's not great and not perfect, but what software is? Every program has it's small little bugs (while they might not be seen as often). Nothing is perfect and neither are we. I've grown to accept the fact that you use a Mac. Why can't you accept the fact that we use Windows by our choice?
2008-07-074:42 PM

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
I DO NOT USE A MAC!!! I told you yesterday! I use Linux thats it there is NO absolutely NO reason to use Windows.
2008-07-074:54 PM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
You said you switched to a Mac. The reason I use Windows is because I have software that won't run in WINE.
2008-07-075:25 PM

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
What software? (Is there a Mac in my signature?)
2008-07-075:26 PM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
Borland Delphi, Popcorn, WinRAR (7-Zip can suffice), Tuniac, DVDx, Game Maker, The3DGameMaker, Genesis3D, Retribution Engine, G-Max, Media Player Classic (not WMP), Turbo Pascal, Turbo C++, etc. I thought you used a Mac more often than you did Linux. Plus how often do you think I look at signatures? lol
2008-07-075:44 PM

BrandonRe:Operating Systems
What!! I NEVER use my mac, I wish I used one more but mine old as hell. Basically it looks as if your one of the guys M$ loves. You have to have them and thats what they want. You could learn C and OpenGL and them you could join the dark side!!
2008-07-075:53 PM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
Yeah but some of those apps are paid programs so I've got $$$ in those programs. I just wish WINE would perfect their DirectX emulation. Then more apps would work fine. The apps that are just simple (like Popcorn) would work decently. I know C and C++ so that's no problem. I haven't done much in OpenGL since 7th grade so I'm pretty rusty with that. But I've got tons of Delphi tutorials and apps with OpenGL/SDL examples.

I met him in a swamp down in Dagoba, Where it bobbles all the like a giant carbonated soda. S..O..D..A...SohoooDahh! I saw the little rimp sitting there on a log, I asked him his name and in a raspy voice he said a Yoda. Y..O..D..A...YohooDahh! Well I've been around but I ain't ever seen, A guy who looks like a muppet but he's wrinkled and green oh my yoda, yo yo yo yo yo..da. Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand, How he can lift me in the air just by raising his hand oh my Yoda, yo yo yo yo yo...da. Start of a good song by weird al yankovic, one of my idols ;).

I've read somewhere that Mac OSX is BSD based (Darwin I think). So if you are using Mac you could kinda say that you are using linux/unix?
2008-07-079:41 PM

ToddRe:Operating Systems
I read that Mac OS is UNIX-based in architecture.
2008-07-0711:21 PM

Yes its based of BSD which is Unix-like, they took parts of the Next operating system, made by Steve Jobs's company when he left Apple.
