BrandonNew CPU & Mobo
I am selling my current mobo and CPU, so today I ordered new ones. The CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4Ghz, the fastest CPU AMD makes! The mobo is an ASUS, I'll post full specs later. I hope it's fast enough to run DOS :P

duh, of course it's not fast enough to run DOS :P

Seems pretty beefy. What do you do with your machine? Play games? Prime factorisation? :P Also, what do you make of Windows 7? I played around with it briefly and didn't think much of it.

I plan to run Ubuntu fast :P I like being able to run multiple VMs and sometimes a game or two. Windows 7 is Windows, it seems as solid as Windows gets, and I recently removed my hdd from an amd cpu and mainboard to the intel cpu and mainboard I'll be using until my new quad comes, and a simple reboot is all that was needed, XP on the other hand would have died. Win7 is good, but not good enough to make me switch.

After being a mac user & linux user for 5 years, i just cant take the plunge back to windows... XP with its blue play-doh skin Vista with its big promises and memory leaks... Windows 7 i tried in september last year (the BETA) was fairly good. I think the biggest problem for windows is they tried to make a complete "ONE" OS. no layers... Unix + Apple = mac os x Linux + KDE/Gnome = Assorted Distros.. they have solid gui's sitting on a solid OS And when an app fails the entire system doesn't crash (usually) instead the front end does. but when windows freezes or crashes the whole system goes under due to the fact its all tied in. so for me no matter what. Windows 7 is still windows no matter how many fancy skins they put on it.

I agree, but I think they succeeded with XP. It's fast (admittedly my setup is heavily stripped down) and I can honestly say it has never crashed on me. If you don't like the look I use bblean, a very lightweight and modular shell.

I do not like how XP installs slow down over time, how when you switch motherboards it BSODs, or keeping antivirus apps upto date all the time. I also like the Package Manager (apt-get) that's why I use Ubuntu, if I want an application, 90% of them are as simple as opening terminal and typing "sudo apt-get install NAME$"

When you install it, it creates specific system files that store info on your mobo so if you swap disks, it'll crash (only way to fix it is to re-install). But there are ways to cheat (AntiWPA). I don't even have to do "sudo" in Debian. lol If I login, I just su and then apt-get (if I'm not already logged in as root). The only problem is that Windows applications in WINE take a little while to get going (which unfortunately is the platform for a wide range of software that I have to use or prefer using over alternatives).

XP is still very much Windows 2000. think of windows 2000 with a skin and an extra service pack and you have XP. the thing i liked about 2k was the fact they took out all the "are you too stupid to use a computer?" help things that pop up etc.. it was stable but needed more support.

everyone complains about windows vista...I still think it's better than XP and 2000. Why? 1. Doesn't slow down after a while, XP used to take 5 minutes to load my desktop 2. Still supports DOS slightly - I can't run GUIs natively but it's useful for DJGPP, DOS utilities, etc. 3. Doesn't BSoD every 5 minutes 4. Windows Security Essentials - I don't know if it comes with XP, but with Vista I just turn it on and I get unnoticable antivirus. Same result as Linux. Oh, I should mention that I turned off aero, uae, auto updates, and security warnings, and that I have a super fast computer. Also, I'm not saying it's better than Linux or Mac, I'm saying it's better than XP and 2000. Why don't I switch to Linux then? Well The Land of Stuff doesn't host itself. (I'm in debate)

Personally, I think Windows and Mac OS X have gone off into another vortex where they compete against each other for aesthetics and market share, while Linux distros still remain and just work on stability and customization, or specialization for certain uses.

i tested longhorn well before vista... the final product was worse than the test releases. linux has just as much eye candy as windows or mac. granted 7 is more stable and seems to run ok id still stay with my mac. i dabble with XP now and again and not really using linux so much these days.
